Position Summary: Able to demonstrate expert knowledge and practice in the general surgery and a commitment to practice development, the Sister/Charge Nurse will be required to deputise for the Ward Manager and ensure positive patient experiences and outcomes through the delivery of high standards of patient care

General
Responsibility:

To demonstrate good clinical practice at all times and to be accountable for own actions
Prioritising workloads and directing staff accordingly
Make efficient use of available resources with regard to budgetary constraints and business objectives
Regularly deputise for Ward/Floor Manager, providing management and leadership in her absence
Promote team working to maximise effectiveness of service delivery
Assess, plan and evaluate care, based on individual patient and family needs
Evaluate the work of the team and ensure standards are met
Assist in audit and quality assessment procedures
Continually seek to develop clinical skills and delivery of care to meet service users expectations
Respect and ensure patient privacy and confidentiality
Maximise revenue capture from patient care
Risk assessment and management, ensuring a safe environment for patients, visitors, staff and colleagues
Assist in recruitment and selection
Support and act as role model for junior staff
Promoting a learning environment, assessing training needs and ensuring these are met
Ensure equipment is adequate and in good working order
To maintain accurate patient and staff records
Provide patients and families with information regarding the care and management of their condition
Responsible for the control storage and administration of drugs
Involvement in projects as required

Requirements KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Registered Nurse Level 1
NMC Registration and PREP requirements
Post Registration qualification
ENB998
Relevant post registration experience
Phlebotomy training desirable
Knowledge of relevant hospital policies and procedures
Health and Safety training
Lifting and Handling

PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY
Day to day staffing issues, showing sensitivity to personnel problems
Early recognition of clinical problems taking appropriate action
Deal with enquiries/complaints and refer as necessary
Dealing with discrepancies on supply issues
To appreciate and adapt to cultural needs
Utilise resources efficiently within budgetary constraints and for a constantly changing workload

SPHERE OF INFLUENCE
Liaison with consultants, managers, staff, patients and visitors
Liaison with other internal and external departments
To demonstrate tact and sensitivity
Support junior staff and assist in training
Initiate and deliver improvements and developments in clinical issues and delivery of care
To be efficient and professional in representing the hospital

RISK AND RESPONSIBILITY
Maintain a high level of clinical practice
To take responsibility for own practice, in accordance with UKCC and hospital guidelines/protocols
Assess, plan and evaluate care
Plan and monitor staffing needs and including preparation of staff rotas
Risk assessment and management
Maintain confidentiality
Awareness of budgetary issues when allocating resources
Capture patient revenues
Ensure adequate teaching and mentoring of junior staff
To be knowledgeable with all equipment, for skilled and safe use and ensure that all staff are trained in use as appropriate
To ensure equipment is in good working order
To keep up to date with current procedures
To maintain accurate staff and patient records
